Wild Iberian Horses

Did wild Iberian Horses Contribute to Origin of Current Iberian Domestic Stock? The earliest known domestic horses are around 4,600 years old. These horses originated in between modern Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Two hypotheses have been suggested, one being domestic horses spread from this area over the rest of Eurasia. The second being horse domestication was a multiregional process, having occurred several times in different local places. When Anders Götherström, from the Department of Evolutionary Biology at Uppsala University, had looked at DNA from modern Iberian horses it pointed to the D1 haplogroup as the most likely group involved in an independent domestication event, maybe in Iberia or in North Africa. Anders and researchers have compared the ancient Iberian sequences from Iberian Neolithic, Bronze Age and Middle Ages obtained in this study with more than 1,000 modern horse sequences. So, wild horses from Iberia contributed to the domestication process.

Even though I don't know know about the Iberian horse breed I still think wild horses are amazing. I think it's really cool that DNA can tell us so much about a breed of horse.
