If you want your cows to be high quality beef then research shows that starting early-weaned cattle on corn and finishing them on a diet high in co-products will make the meat even better. Dan Shike is a scientist that said "The goal is to get the highest quality beef product in the most profitable way." This study used heifers from the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center. The heifers were weaned at an average age of 77 days and fed a high-corn ration for the next 146 days to initiate marbling. After the 77 days they were split into 4 groups:pasture-fed; high starch; intermediate starch; and low starch . Treatment continued for 73 days. Dan Shike says there is still studying left to do but this diet does work if you want higher quality beef!
I love steak! The better the quality the beef the more expensive it is. People would be willing to pay more for the higher quality. I think it's really cool that a cow's meat can all depend on their diet. I want to have cows on my farm when i get older but I want dairy cows not cows to eat.
