Scienstists in Ohio State University have studied the behavior of silica when heated. Scientists know that the Earths crusts is made of 2/3 silica. Studying the behavior of silica can help very much with the understanding of the inner workings, and make up of Earth. The main challenge faced is that when under pressure and heat, silicas behaivor changes and is hard to predict.
This is very important. Knowing and understanding how our own planet works can be useful in many ways. Predicting the shift in magnetic poles and many other things are made possible with discoveries like these.
