Black Bear biologist Lynn Rogers believes that placing food out for bears along populated areas helps prevent the bears from breaking into homes. He claims that the main reason Black Bears become aggressive and break into homes is because they are desperate for food, such as in times of drought. He believes that humans and bears coming into contact with each other will help lessen the fear on both sides. Not all scientists are buying his theory, however. Some biologists believe that people feeding bears is dangerous for both parties, as bears are unpredictable and may attack humans without warning, and people feeding them may also change their sleeping habits.
I think that feeding the bears to keep them out of houses is a good idea. However, I think the food should be placed outside ahead of time so that people do not come in contact with bears. It may only be a temporary solution, but it has been proven effective. I think this is a good idea to work with until a better solution is found. It is fortunate that Rogers was at least able to explain the bears' behavior and that he was able to discover the root of the problem.
