Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium was created by Translational Genomics Research Institute and the Van Andel Research Institute. This is a program designed to study naturally occurring cancers in dogs. The purpose is to better understand why people and dogs get sick. Since rare cancers also show up in dogs, by studying both dogs and humans they hope to find the reason why they happen and find cures quicker. Using voluntarily donated saliva, blood and tumor samples from many breeds of family owned dogs, They hope that by studying canine cancers they can pinpoint the causes of human cancers.
I think this is a great idea! I did not know rare cancers can show up in dogs too. I think it;s good they are finding cures for both dogs and humans. I love animals and it makes me happy to know that research is being done to help animals as well as humans. Also its good to see that the animal samples were donated and no dogs were hurt in the process.
