New Spending For A Wider Range Of Sex Education

The New Sex Law Spends Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars On Sex Education Programs That Aim To Provide Teens With Comprehensive Information About How To Not Get Pregnant And How To Be Safe From Sexually Transmitted Diseases. The Programs Are Used To Encourage Teens To Wait On Sexual Activity But To Also Be Protected If They Are Already Active. They Also Discuss Condom Risks And Failures And Discussing They Should Avoid Touching Homosexuality And Abortion.

My Opinion Is That These Programs Are Great. Even Though They Don't Always Get Through To Some People, They Get Through To Most. Teens, Especially In High School, Needs This Type Of Education Tought To Them For The Simple Fact That They Are Considered Adults And Most Of Them Feel The Need To Experiment. It Is Wonderful That Schools Are Willing To Teach This Course To Help Save Peoples Lives, Emotionaly, Physically, And Mentally.

Childhood: Overweight Children And Bullying

School Children Are More Likely To Get Bullied If They Are Overweight. They Say That 60% Are More Likely If They Are Obese. 13% More Likely If They Are Just Simply Overweight. Children That Are Overweight Will Get Bullied No Matter What Race They Are, What Sex They Are, Where They Live Or Anything Of that Nature.

In My Opinion I Feel That All Children Should Be Treated Equal. But Then Again Some Children Either Weren't Raised Correctly Or They Feel Bad About Theirselves And Want To Bring Someone Elses Self-Esteem Down With Theirs. I Dont Like How Children These Days Are Treated And I Wish It Could All Come To An End, Because Bullying Can Lead To Someone Getting Hurt Or Even Death.

.At Front Lines, AIDS War Is Falling Apart

Uganda Is The First And Most Obvious Example Of How The War On Global Aids Is Falling Apart. The Last Decade Has Been What Doctors Has Call The "Golden Window" For Treatment. In Uganda Where Fewer Than 10,000 Were On Drugs A Decade Ago, Nearly 200,000 Now Are, Largley As A Result Of American Gernorosity. Now The Golden Window Is Closing. Uganda Is The First Country To Routinely Turn People Away.

In My Opinion I Feel That The United States, A Country With Basically Everything, Needs To Step In And Help That Country Who Has Basically Nothing. We Need To Stop Being Selfish And Send Medicine Over To Help Save Peoples Lives. Its Not Their Fault That Their Country Is Poor, They Can't Change The Fact That They Don't Have Enough Doctors To Help Them Cure Their Problems. But We Can.

The Disappearing Male

This artical was about how male births have decreased significantly since 1970. It decresed from 2/3 of births to just over 1/2 in Japan. Japan is one of the more worrying places where male births are lowering. Also the number of fetuses that die are increasingly male. A study on this reports that an overall decline of 17 males per 10, 000. This decline is unexplained so far to scientists but it could become a worse problem. Although, scientists think there are many factors pretaining to the decrease. Male to female birth ratios will be strictly monitored.

I never really put much thought into male to female birth rate. I never thought of it as a problem until I read this. I don't really know what scientists will find out. I hope they will find a way to make this problem reduce itself. It makes me wonder what would cause it and how it can be fixed. Overall, the artical was interesting to me.

Soda drinks found to accelerate signs of aging

New research says that sodas acually accelerate signs of aging. It may also increase age-related problems like kidney disease, cardiovascular calcification, and skin atrophy. The levels of phosphate is the culprit. Phosphate is used in sodas is elevated and can make you live less and increase signs of aging. Scientists did tests on this with mice. One set of mice had elevated phosphate and lived about 8 to 15 weeks. While, the other set lived 20 weeks. Scientists say keep your phosphate levels healthy and keep it in balance for a longer life.

I didn't know anything about "phosphate" or anything like that that was in soda. I never really put that much thought into it. I would definitely want to try to control my soda intake. It makes me want to think more of what I put into my body and the consequenses. I wouldn't want to make myself more toxic or make myself age faster.

What to Do When a Newborn Can’t Hear

when babies are born you are suppose to have their hearing screened. 97 percent of babies born in this country have their hearing screened. 46 percent of the children fail to have good hearing. when this happens you can get your child a tiny microphone inserted into the ear to help sound get to the brain. you can also get them speech and language therapy.

In my opinion, i think that the suggestions above are the best ways to help with deaf or mute children. I feel that we should do everything possible to help these children hear or speak. We should stop wasting money on things we dont need and put money into supplies that will actually have a positive effect on somones life.

'Man's Best Friend' Aid Cancer Research

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100415080857.htm

Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium was created by Translational Genomics Research Institute and the Van Andel Research Institute. This is a program designed to study naturally occurring cancers in dogs. The purpose is to better understand why people and dogs get sick. Since rare cancers also show up in dogs, by studying both dogs and humans they hope to find the reason why they happen and find cures quicker. Using voluntarily donated saliva, blood and tumor samples from many breeds of family owned dogs, They hope that by studying canine cancers they can pinpoint the causes of human cancers.

I think this is a great idea! I did not know rare cancers can show up in dogs too. I think it;s good they are finding cures for both dogs and humans. I love animals and it makes me happy to know that research is being done to help animals as well as humans. Also its good to see that the animal samples were donated and no dogs were hurt in the process.

Users Believe Electronic Cigarettes Can Help You Quit

95 percent of participants in a survey said that Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have helped them (even just a little bit) quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. These cigarettes use no real tobacco and may be used for people trying to quit. Although, some people are concerned about health risks involved. Further tests need to be made concerning the toxity of these e-cigarettes. Also, more tests need to go into the effects of the second hand smoke made my these. Although user's results were generally positive, there could be future health risks.

I think that this could help a lot of people quit smoking. It can also be a better option for people breathing the air. I also thought that more tests should be made because it could be unsafe for all we know. Since very few of these tests have been performed. Poor quality, lack of reliability, and frequent failures were mentioned by the people being surveyed. I think the e-cigarettes could potentially be a good solution to smokers. With a little more work on them, of course.

meteor contains traces of water for first time

for the first time in the history of the earth, something from another planet has showed a sign of water and maybe life on another planet as a metoer landed on earth and contained traces of water. for so many years, people have been traveling into space and trying to get to other planets to try and find if there is any signs of life or water on any other planet other than earth, and finally they may have got their answer. a meteor from outer space landed on earth and contained a trace of water, this means that whatever planet the meteor may have broken off from contains some type of water. this could mean one of 2 things, either the planet that it came from contains wtaer and can contain another lifeform and the other thing it might be is that it is just a rock from space that might have got rained on and leads us to believe that it was from another planet, but whatever the case may be, scientists may have found the answer that they have been searching for for so many years
when i saw this article i figured it might have been interesting to many students because it might be a part of history showing life on other planets. i think that if we find that there might be water on other planets then we can travel onto those planets and discover more about them.

Male or Female?

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100504173819.htm

When it comes to flies sometimes its hard to tell wether it's male or female. Researchers at the Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute did a study on how to tell the gender of the fly. They found that most cells in the flies are identical in both male and female. They say the reason is the influence of sex-determining genes is restricted to certain tissues. In the 1980s, it was known that a cascade of genes determines how tissues and organs develop in a sex-specific manner not just one. In female flies express one form of doublesex, and males another.Baker's group found that during fly development, doublesex switches on and off at different times and in different tissues.Baker's group found that during fly development, doublesex switches on and off at different times and in different tissues.

Well I don't quite understand the double-sex thing. I have always wondered about how to tell if a fly is a boy or girl. This was kind of a weird article and I just thought it would be funny to read but it's confusing to me. I guess it's pretty cool that a fly could be male or female i just know i wouldn't want to be both! I like who I am!

cleaning up the earthquake in Haiti

people have stopped worrying about the people in haiti and think they have helped enough trying to cleanup from their major earthquake, but for the people in haiti and for people that have family and know people that got injured or died from the earthquake in haiti know that it is the farthest thing from over, anyone could say they did their job by donating a dollar or two, but until they know how the people in haiti are living, and that not all the people died from being crushed by houses or buildings, but from starving to death because of the loss of money they cannot get any food or water and they do not have any shelter to protect themselves, people should still try and help as much as they can until everything is back to normal in haiti.
The article that i read about the people in haiti trying to survive was not that interesting, but i tried to make it sound as interesting as i could because the people in haiti really could use as much help as they can get.

Water discovered on an Asteroid

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100428-asteroid-water-first-ice-frost-themis/

For the first time, water has been discovered on an asteroid. This is a very important scientific find, since it could hold the secret of how our planet became conducive to life. The asteroid's name is 24 Themis, and the sun's reflection off of ice on it was seen from a Nasa base in Hawaii. To sum up this find- Asteroids may have brought life to Earth.

Although at first glance I thought this article to be an uninteresting one, until I realized what this can mean as far as Earth's history. I wonder if this could be the next link in the chain of discovery of Earth's origin.

Lyme Disease Vaccine? Tick Saliva Found to Protect Mice from Lyme Disease

This artical was about how Lyme disease can be prevented by the saliva of its pathogen-the tick. A protein in the saliva can help work as a vaccine to prevent an affect that the tick can make. The body can make immunity to the disease if injected with the siliva of the tick. Scientists say that this can be true for many kinds of disease-spreading animals. By injecting the protein, it creates something that counteracts the poison the tick spreads and prevents the Lyme Disease. Scientist are now looking for cures/preventions for all sorts of diseased like this using similar techniques. Such as West Nile Virus and dengue fever.

This is a great discovery made my scientists. It can help many people and save lives. I found it interesting how they found out this worked. Scientists injected mice with the saliva and exposed the mice with Lyme disease. I found it interesting that they knew what to do and that they knew how to fix it. I'm glad that they made this discovery and maybe they can find some more cures for even worse diseases. Maybe they can even use this technique.

Scientists greater understand the memory loss caused by age.

A new drug is being developed and used to stop memory loss. In animals, the drug boosted memory. In humans it is believed it will stop and possibly even reversememory loss. This can be useful in helping people lead a normal life even in old age.

I believe this discovery is very important. Memory loss has been a problem for scientists to figure for a very long time. Millions are affected by memory loss, or know someone that is affected. When scientists learn to control it, it can help people to lead normal lives.

Scienstists study deep earth.

Scienstists in Ohio State University have studied the behavior of silica when heated. Scientists know that the Earths crusts is made of 2/3 silica. Studying the behavior of silica can help very much with the understanding of the inner workings, and make up of Earth. The main challenge faced is that when under pressure and heat, silicas behaivor changes and is hard to predict.

This is very important. Knowing and understanding how our own planet works can be useful in many ways. Predicting the shift in magnetic poles and many other things are made possible with discoveries like these.

Star found traveling through space

The Hubble telescope has found a large star traveling at more than 400000 kilometers per hour. That speed could get you from the Earth to the Moon and back in two hours. Scientists say the star is traveling because larger stars or star explosions may have forced it out of its normal area. The star is thought to be very young, and very large. It may be up to 90 times heavier than the sun and 1 to 2 million years old.

I believe this discovery is important. Knowing this star is traveling could help prevent any possible collision with Earth, even though it is not believed to happen. Knowing what is happening around us only makes us that much more prepared.

active volcanoes

an active volcano in greenland that has been erupting for the past couple of weeks has not let up and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon, as it is still sending out dangerous gasses and peices of debris into the air. some scientists believe that the erupting is due to the climate changes that this part of the world is having and they say it is bad news for the people that believe in global warming, because this might be what is causing this volcano to erupt. some efforts in order to control the volcao and hopefully get it to stop have not worked at all and the volcano continues to erupt.
i thimk this article was interesting due to the fact that global warming may be causing this volcano to erupt which is not good news to the people in the world that believe that global warming will happen and maybe convincing news to the people that dont believe global warming is possible.

New Clue Why Autistic People Don't Want Hugs

This artical is about how people with "Fragile X Syndrome" more commonly known as autism recoil from hugs and physical touch. People with autism have a delayed sensory cortex with affects how their brain reacts to touch. Problems with this can have a domino effect and affect other parts of the brain. There is a time when the brain is changing so rapidly. This is when the symptoms can start occurring. Autistic people do not look into peoples' eyes and do not like physical contact with others. This is because of the delayed sensory corex.

I find this interesting because I didn't even know that autistic people didn't like physical touch. Although, it does make sense that there would be a delay in the brain causing the dislike of it. The artical affects me some because one of the children I babysit has autism and I can understand him better now because of the facts. I can notice what kind of things he doesn't like as for physical contact because I have a better understanding of it. I think it's a great medical discovery because now they can understand autistic ways better also.

Scientists have found the key to large dinosaurs.

Researchers have found the key to the large dinosaurs of the Jurassic time period. They say that just like any large animal, dinosaurs needed to eat a lot of food. Some dinosaurs may have spent up to 30 hours at a time satisfying their appetite. Another reason for the large dinosaurs was that instead of chewing like humans and other mammals, they gulped food.

I belie this discovery is interesting. Many things are known about dinosaurs, but the fact that researchers could make this discovery without ever seeing one of these giants is amazing. The questions about the relationship between modern animals and dinosaurs could be partially solved with this new information.

Illuminating Bioluminescence

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/05/photogalleries/100507-glowing-animals-bioluminescence-science-pictures/#bioluminescent-creatures-explained-group_20010_600x450.jpg

Bioluminescence is exclusive mainly to underwater creatuers. This is the technique of an animal creating its own light. This ability is very useful to animals living in the open ocean, since they use a method of hiding in the darker parts of the sea during daytime, and rising to catch prey at night.

These creatures are amazing, in my opinion. I remember the children's film, "Finding Nemo" stirring my interest in sea creatures such as the ones mentioned in this article. Scientists still don't fully understand Bioluminescence, but I look forward to scientific leaps in understanding of it surfacing in the future.

Cameras that take pictures in 3-D

Manufacturers in the Netherlands have desingned a camera to film in three dimensions. The company making the cameras, FBK has used similar software to capture images for surveillence and in videogames. The software was modified and improved to show images im 3-D. The camera also takes pictures with pixels one-tenth the size of a human hair, making it one of the most detailed cameras in the world.

I think the camera will be a great seller. Many people will buy it because it is a great new technology, and very entertaining to see and use. Although many other advances in technology would be more important, this camera will be very interesting, and will give a great starting point for new technologic advances.

Hole Found in Space!!!

The European Space Agency has found a hole in space. This discovery gives the chance to research the death of stars. For most of the 20th century researchers thought the mass to be a dark cloud. The mass has been labeled NGC 1999 and is now known to be a hole caused by jets of gasses thrown out by newborn stars.

In my opinion this discovery is not that important. Many other things are important like the closing of the oil leak near Lousiana. Although it may be something that astronomers have never seen, it is not important .

Brown Recluse Spider Is Sometimes to Blame When Anemia Strikes

This artical was about how the Brown Recluse spider can be a cause of acute anemia. Doctors usually don't check for spider bites when diagnosing anemia-which can be cause by the Brown Recluse spider. The bites are rarely checked because most people do not know when they are bitten by one of them because they are generally painless. These particual spiders can also cause blood clotting and kidney failure. Although this is much more rare than anemia. Children and adolescents seem to have more chance of these problems occurring. 3o percent of the spider bites lead to a problem like this.

This article scares me a bit because I know we have this type of spider near my house. It also interests me because I've had anemia before. It makes me wonder if a spider bite could have been the reason why. It also gives me a sense of relief because they are now figuring out these kinds of things. It could help a lot of people and help doctor's diagnose anemia's causes faster because they now have another option.

Neanderthal-Human cross-breeding

Based on this article: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/05/100506-science-neanderthals-humans-mated-interbred-dna-gene/.

Evidence found recently suggests that modern day homo-sapiens and neanderthals lived side by side for many thousands of years, and that the two species cross breeded. This is how, scientists are now saying, we are now genetically who we are. Modern-day homo sapiens are thought to have as little as 1-4% neanderthal in their genes, but many scientists say the actual percentage could be much higher.

I won't elaborate on this much since, after all, I am a Christian. For this reason I do not believe in evolution. I do, however, find this study rather interesting- if this theory were true, how fascinating it would be to have two humanoid species live side-by-side! How would they view each other? Would there be prejudices? Why have relations with a being of another genetic structure in the first place? I hope these are answered as time goes by, and science solves (or tries, anyway) life's great mysteries.

Wild Iberian Horses

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100107114431.htm

Did wild Iberian Horses Contribute to Origin of Current Iberian Domestic Stock? The earliest known domestic horses are around 4,600 years old. These horses originated in between modern Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Two hypotheses have been suggested, one being domestic horses spread from this area over the rest of Eurasia. The second being horse domestication was a multiregional process, having occurred several times in different local places. When Anders Götherström, from the Department of Evolutionary Biology at Uppsala University, had looked at DNA from modern Iberian horses it pointed to the D1 haplogroup as the most likely group involved in an independent domestication event, maybe in Iberia or in North Africa. Anders and researchers have compared the ancient Iberian sequences from Iberian Neolithic, Bronze Age and Middle Ages obtained in this study with more than 1,000 modern horse sequences. So, wild horses from Iberia contributed to the domestication process.

Even though I don't know know about the Iberian horse breed I still think wild horses are amazing. I think it's really cool that DNA can tell us so much about a breed of horse.

Fly Gut Bacteria Could Control Sleeping Sickness

This article was about how the Sleeping sickness can be designed into a way to kill the parasites in the disease. Current drugs in Africa are extremely expensive and creating a more effective way to control the parasite will help many people. By giving people a better opportunity to control the sickness, more lives will be saved. Scientist Anne Geiger says: "Our work could lead to an alternatative vector-based approach that exploits selected strains of bacteria naturally present in the fly's gut to either kill the parasite, or prevent it from establishing it in the gut," This disease is also dangerous to animals. It can establish itself in cows and other animals. This negatively impacts the African economy.

I think that this article was interesting because I didn't even know about this disease. It's also sad to me because Africa has to deal with so many diseases because of lack of medical care. I think that if a cure or a way to prevent this was created, life would be a lot better for the African people. This is a great breakthrough also for these people because it affected so many people. It also messed up the economy because the Sleeping Sickness even effected livestock.

What ever happened to the Ozone hole?

This article, http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/05/100505-science-environment-ozone-hole-25-years/, is about the hole in the earth's ozone layer, which was discovered almost 25 years ago. Chemicals in aerosols and other products are part of the reason for the wearing down of ozone in our atmosphere. Laughing gas is actually thought to be the biggest threat to ozone. These products are responsible because certain atoms from the chemicals given off take oxygen atoms from the ozone. Due to tighter restrictions on products that might do this, the ozone layer is now recovering, scientists say.

Woohoo! I, growing up in school, was always made to fear this "hole" so commonly refered to by teachers. The doomsday scenario depicted in Al Gore's "An inconvenient Truth" was enough to make me believe we would meet our demise as a species much sooner than expected. I still think, however, that we should be coutious despite this gradual victory we are facing.

Powermeter by Google

This article, http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100409-energy-google-powermeter/, tells about the new software by google called Powermeter which moniters a household's energy consumtion over a given period of time. The program itself is free to download, yet those wishing to use it must hook up their appliances with a piece of hardware called "The energy detective". Many supporters of this new technology want it to be a household standard in America.

I love the idea of a tool that illustrates energy consumption in such a clear, precise way. My only question is- why has this not come out sooner? Now, as with any new technology (ie cell phones, lap tops), it will take a very long time for this to become a standard in American homes. I feel that Powermeter and The Energy Detective could be one step closer for America toward building a cleaner, greener nation.

Several Different Species of Killer Whales Likely

Scientists have found several species of killer whales based on the differences of behavior, feeding, and physical features. They have taken samples from 139 killer whales from the North Pacific and analyzed them. Scientists have found all kinds of species because of the difference in the types of food they eat. Scientists are also trying to save money by using sequencing of DNA instead of historical methods of analysis. Sequencing of DNA lets us research more whales at one time. Determining how many species of killer wales there are is important so resource managers can better understand the ecological role of this predator.

This is awesome that the scientist have figured out there is more than one type of killer whale. I have always thought there was only one type of killer whale, but it turns out there are many. I think it would be fun to get samples of DNA and then match them up with others to see which ones are the same type. Its really good that these scientists are discovering things like this for not a whole lot of money. We do need to know these things, but at least were not spending tons of money on it. I think the scientists should come up with different names for the types of killer whales so then we know which type someone was talking about.

High Quality Beef???

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100510151350.htm

If you want your cows to be high quality beef then research shows that starting early-weaned cattle on corn and finishing them on a diet high in co-products will make the meat even better. Dan Shike is a scientist that said "The goal is to get the highest quality beef product in the most profitable way." This study used heifers from the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center. The heifers were weaned at an average age of 77 days and fed a high-corn ration for the next 146 days to initiate marbling. After the 77 days they were split into 4 groups:pasture-fed; high starch; intermediate starch; and low starch . Treatment continued for 73 days. Dan Shike says there is still studying left to do but this diet does work if you want higher quality beef!

I love steak! The better the quality the beef the more expensive it is. People would be willing to pay more for the higher quality. I think it's really cool that a cow's meat can all depend on their diet. I want to have cows on my farm when i get older but I want dairy cows not cows to eat.

tornadoes in oklahoma

in the past couple of days, oklahoma has had some of the worst tornadoes the state has ever seen. the tornadoes have brought heavy winds, a ton of rain, left whole towns destroyed, a few deaths, many injuries, and 9000 in a few towns without power in their houses. people are evacuating from the areas that the tornadoes have been coming through, but some have no where to go. people have been warned to watch for tornadoes in this area and people took the warning, but the tornadoes have had their way and have been able to tear down house and kill a total of 7 people and injure hundreds, maybe thousands of people. the red cross has been collecting money to help people in the hospital and to help people rebuild their houses.
i liked this article because it shows that you can never be safe during a tornado and they can happen during any storm and destroy towns and kill people, but now that i is getting closer to summer and tornadoes are more likely to happen now than any other time of the year, people should be warned about what can happen during them.

Mozart's Music Does Not Make You Smarter, Study Finds

For almost fifteen years scientists have thought that listening the classical music enhanced the brain as a child. But researchers Jakob Pietschnig, Martin Voracek and a few others at the University of Vienna have research that this method does not really work. New York Times wrote an article about how listening to Mozart would help students with SAT, and many scientists thougth it would help children, too.

I found this article interesting because iv'e heard from a few people listening to Mozart would help make you smarter, but it seems like thats not the case. the brain does work in weird ways, but apparently ot doesn't respond to music. The study of psychology is so fascinating.

Odd way of cleaning up oil spill in Gulf of Mexico

could hair be the most effective way of cleaning up the oil spill in the gulf of mexico? some scientists believe that if they could collect enough hair/fur/wool and put it together, they could soak up the oil in the gulf of mexico, they believe this because why do people wash their hair in the shower? to get the oil ou of their hair, the oil gets soaked into peoples hair after their bodies release the oils, and peoples hair is able to collect that oil, so maybe if we can collect enough hair, the oil spill can be over. it may sound weird, but your hair on your head might be the most effective way of cleaning the oil spill that is killing many animals and ruing the water in the gulf of mexico.
i thought this article was odd, but once i read into it and started thinking about it, this idea might work if we could collect enough hair. i chose to write about this article because it mightbe interesting to other students, and it sounds interesting.

Underground "Fossil Water" Running Out.

This water was traped eons ago in huge aquafiers. Many places that dont have a lot of water to use is using this and experts say that when this water runs out, its gone FOREVER! Bringing this fossil water to the surface may cause problems in other water quality.

This is amazing. I find it cool that this water was held there and has been held in these places for so long. I hope that the people that are using these aquafiers filled with fossil water will not run out of this since they dont have anyother water. I find it weird that this water can cause problems in other types of water on the surface.

Bereaved relatives helped by chance to view body after sudden loss

People who loose a loved one to murder, suicide or an accident can occasionally benefit from being allowed to see the dead person's body, even if the body has began to decay or is damaged really bad. At first looking at the dead body of a loved one makes a person sad and distressful, but most of those people don't regret that decision as time passes. Little is known about how relatives respond to viewing the body of a person who has had a violent death.

This is a very interesting study on how the brain works, and I'm glad someone took the time to do this research because many people don't know how to cope or don't know if it's the right decision to view a loved one's dead body. Maybe this research will help guide a person to do the right thing when it comes to this type of situation, and maybe it will help a person in the long run. The mind is a very powerful tool.

'Mouse Grimace Scale' to Help Identify Pain in Humans and Animals

Researchers from McGill University and the University of British Columbia are using mice to construct a research study. They are using mice as if they were humans and are testing them with the same pain humans have. The researchers then come up with a new medicine to relieve the pain. They are trying to find new and better pain relief medicines for humans. Researchers have successfully developed a scale to measure responses in animals that resemble human responses to the same painful states. The latest test they have tried is putting the mice through surgical procedures and then giving the mice analgesic drugs at the right doses and seeing if they work well.

I think this is a great way to find new medicines for us humans. I think our body's get addicted to the same pain relief medicine if you use it all the time like most of us do. It would probably be better if we didn't take the same medicine all the time because then it might not do it's job every time. If researchers can find cures for pain this way then I wonder if they could find cures for more diseases. It would be really cool if they could find a cure to cancer or something big like that. These researchers should keep testing these mice and find new cures for humans.

A New Primate

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100511092149.htm

There has been found a new type of primate; the 'Nosmips aenigmaticus.' This type of primate has been identified through fossils of its teeth, very well preserved. These primates have been dated back by 37 million years. The only fossils that paleontologists have are the teeth, so they do not know what the bodies of the actual things look like, but from what they can infer, these primates are not closely related, if related at all, to the other three groups of primates: the lemur-like primates, the early monkeys, or the extinct adapiforms. Also, through the teeth fossils, we're able to infer that these extinct primates ate more insects than they did leaves, which is another reason why they're not very closely related to the other primate groups. Since these fossils are not closely related to those of other primates, the fossils could lead to some sort of extraordinary information that could solve many unknown puzzles to primate evolution.

I was looking for an article of fossils, of any kind, and I came across this. I thought this article was amazing, and very thought-provoking. I'm very interested in learning about fossils, and how they compare with other organisms that are present in our everyday lives. So, this article was perfect! I thought it was amazing to have found an official fourth type of primate, and how this will probably solve some unanswered questions that we have about evolution. What I'm really excited about is how the body of the primate will look, and I'm also wondering if scientists can conjure an educated guess as to how the head of the primate looks compared to its teeth. Overall, I found this article to be amazing.

Science loses out when ice caps melt

Glaciologist have been studying current ice caps and mountains and they have began to notice that the ice and glaciers are beginning to melt at three times the speed at ground level. Most of this melting activity is based off of the high temperatures that have been occurring world wide. Climatologist have made it known that temperatures are warming at an increasing speed. Most mountains can contain snow on them for years because of the altitudes however the glaciers melting at the bottom are causing mountains to decrease in elevation and cause other natural disasters such as: Earthquakes, Slides, and Floods. In my opinion, this can only turn into a negative impact on the world in a way. However; the melting does supply the Earth with an increase in Freshwater which is slowly but surely being used at a high rate.

Absent a Moon or Mars, Recreating Space 65 Feet Under the Sea

This Article Is Discussing How The United States Government And NASA Has Decided Not To Send Astronauts To The Moon Or Mars For At least A Decade Because They Plan On Building An Undersea Laboratory Next To A Coral Reef. They Say That Aquanauts Can See How It Is To Be On The Moon Or Mars From Living Underwater. But Then Again The Materials May Not Be Built Because The Obama Administation Proposed That Astronauts Be Sent Back To The Moon. During The Two Weeks That They Are In The Laboratory The Aquanauts Will Go On Simulated Space Walks, Operate A Crane, And Do Other Tasks.

My Opinion On This;
This Is A Great Idea, I Dont Understand Why They Haven't Thought Of This Before, Technology Is Really Growing At A Fast Rate. On The Other Side Of That If We Use Too Much Of Technology At The Rate We Are, There Wont Be Anything For The Future For Other People To Invent Because Everything Is Basically Invented. I Think That Society Should Really Cool Down On Inventing Things.

Message in a dinosaur's teeth

In the reading from my understanding there once were multiple dinosaurs living in the same environment. Each dinosaurs different but at the same time all of the dinosaurs were dependant upon meat. However, through paleontologists searches they have discovered that possibly some of the dinosaurs lived in the water too. Which helped them avoid clashes in search of food. Different found features/fossils have led paleontologists to this conclusion. Such as: snouts like crocodiles, and stomach fossils that the dinosaurs ate fish. In my opinion, Dinosaurs could have lived in the water areas as well because they have similar fossils but at the same time the dinosaurs probably would have lasted longer if their competition wasn't so high. Meaning if there wasn't competition for food then they would have had longer life spans.

Watering The Air

Throughout the Midwest, climatologist are beginning to believe that temperature are cooler in the summer than other areas around the US. Climatologists also believe that rainfall is more common on these grounds too. These facts are becoming more easier to explain with the connection it has to farming and humidity. In my opinion, the difference in temperature and rainfall is understanding because farmland is more abundant in the Midwest and over time I can understand if the land has adapted to a way of producing its own natural way of producing produce or any other kind of naturally grown food.

Phosphorous and the Sky?

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100510132159.htm

Did phosphorous really contribute to the way our skies are blue, and did it cause complex evolution? Domonic Papineau says so. Billions of years ago, when geologic activity was occurring, heavy amounts of phosphorous poured into the oceans. From the phosphorous, algal plants started growing in the oceans and then pumped many tons of oxygen into the then-methane-filled-air. Back when Earth's sky was filled with methane, the sky was orange. When the oxygen took over, the sky turned blue. The reason for evolution changes was because of the oxygen, how the organisms began to develop cell structures, called mitochondria, which burn oxygen to produce energy. Because they pumped so much energy, many fossils are able to be found, and most of those fossils are parts of organisms that were alive during the Cambrian Explosion. Papineau also found that the atmospheric changes contributed with many phosphate deposits, which is probably the cause for different patterns in continental rifting and the different changes in climate. Those changes in the patterns in the rifting and climate would lead to different amounts of chemical weathering and other erosion, leading to more phosphorous being poured into the ocean.

This article wasn't really that interesting. I clicked on it to see what kind of information it had, because in science class I was wondering what the atmosphere was like before oxygen came, and why our sky is blue. I thought that learning about the way methane filled the air before oxygen was pretty neat, especially how some plants and organisms survived and adapted to the methane atmosphere. What one thing is that I would like to know would be which organisms actually adapted, so I could see where some of our current-day species evolved from. I think that would be interesting. And, how long it took for those species to adapt from methane to oxygen, and what species died off and the species that became new from the adaptation. This is the kind of science that fascinates me, learning about the geologic history of Earth and the interdependence of all the different organisms living on Earth at different times at different places.

animal feed not cars kills this town

in the san juaquin valley, animal feed is the production of smog not cars or other fossil fuel burners. the animal feed given to cows works with automotives exaust to create ozone. this town is a smog hotspot because of this. this town produces 10 percent of americas food. it has puzzzled scientists because of its few automobiles but high smog levels.
this is very interesting because the smog could kill the animals reducing the food income for the united states. people should create a animal feed that doesnt have the chemicals that mix woth the feed and create ozone.

renewable energy

studys show that an inexpensive metal catalyst can generate hydrogen from water. the metal is 70 times cheaper than platinum. its based on a molybdenum oxo metal complx. it can operate in polluted water and in sea water and does not require organic additives.
i think this could revolutionies the way we use electricity we could be using hydrogen to power our homes in no time. and its affordable so it could be placed in cars to.

global warming = severe storms

meterologists have discovered that changes in climate due to global warming have been the cause of severe storms around the world. severe storms are flooding, damageing winds, hail, and tornados. the study shows that the number of days a certain area has could double by the end of this century. this could increase the number of deaths by storms a year andincrease the damage costs done by storms.
this is very intreseting although most of us wont be alive at the end of the century it will affect the next generation. global warming needs to be stopped and put and end to. its scaring people.

killer seaweed

a study shows that a chemical in seaweed damages coral reefs on contact. usually seaweede is eaten by herbavouris fish but due to overfishing sea weed is over populating reefs and killing them. this isnt a large problem ompared to the damage humans are doing to the reef but its a growing problem and could eventually become extremely harmful to coral reefs. in the study between 40 and 70 percent of the seaweeds they tested killed corals.
i think that fishing limits should be made all around the world. i know the price of fish will go up but we'll be saving something natrual and beutiful. people should stop being so selfish and start trying to protect the coral reefs because who knows how much longer they will last.

fog cleans air pollution

scientists have discovered that morning fog removes particles in the air that are bad for people with repitory problems. the water particles in the fog are small enough to attach and hold onto small particles in the air. when the fog settles to the ground the air pollutants go with it.
i think thats very interesting because some fogs like "smog" are very harmful to humans but i guess not all fogs are bad. this could help scientists in curing bad fog and figuring out how the water particles work.

Sickle-Cell Anemia

People With Sickel-Cell Anemia Usually Have A Lower Than Average IQ. Researchers Report In The May 12th Journal Of The American Medical Association The The Poor Performance Comes Even When The MRI Scan Shows No Brain Damage And They Have No Other Complications From The Disease, Except For Anemia And Pain. "These Neurocognitive Effects Are An Invisible Complication Of The Central Nervous System In Sickle-Cell Disease", Stated Samir Ballas. Sickle-Cell Anemia Results From An Inherited Genetic Mutation That Causes Red Blood Cells To Take On A Curved Or Sickle Shape That Impairs Blood Flow, Thwarts Oxygen Delievery And Leads To A Host Of Other Problems.

My Opinion On This Article Is That They Are Doing A Good Job On The Studies. I Think They Should Try To Find A Cure For Sickle-Cell Disease So That People With The Disease Isnt In Pain All The Time, This Cure Could Really Help Alot Of People. The Blood Transfusions Should Help The Pain A Little Bit Also. Hopefully People With Sickle-Cell Wont Get Blood Clots And Die.

Jurassic Matters

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100511074825.htm

If you've ever wondered why Jurassic dinosaurs were so gigantic, you've come to the right place. The reason that Jurassic dinosaurs were so large is because they did not grind their food with teeth; rather, they just swallowed their food whole. This is contrary to our current-day animal life, how all the animals are small, because we all chew our food. The dinosaurs did not have many teeth to chew their food with, and since they did not chew their food, they needed more time for their food to digest. The dinosaurs would spend most of their day just searching for food, because of their size, they would be constantly hungry. Herbivorous dinosaurs had long necks because of this; instead of moving their bodies, which weighed 80 tons, they would just move their neck and search for their food.

I thought this article was pretty fascinating. I had never put any thought as to why Jurassic dinosaurs were so huge, I just thought they were gigantic because that was how they just were. It's kind of funny that I never put any thought into it, as it had always been a question of mine. So, when I saw this article, I was really excited, and I read it within minutes. I finally found an answer, and it made a lot of sense to me, too! I'm really glad that I found the reason why Jurassic dinosaurs were so gigantic.

new way to prevent oil spills

scientists in norway are inventing a way to prevent oil spills. the component there making is a boom, seperator, and skimmer. the boom pumps the water mixed with oil into the collecting vessel. the seperator and skimmer are to collect oil that had been submerged by break waves. all the components are connected together to work simmultainously.
i think this is very beneficial to oil compaies if they can afford it. the invention is top notch so its going to be expensive. it will help protect the enviorment and stop polluting the water. water is going to be cleaner and less dangerous for people to use.

River In Maine heals

This article, http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/thegreenguide/2010/05/rivers-can-healwhen-given-a-ch.html, is about the Kennebec River in Maine. This river served as the livelyhood of the surrounding community until the late 1800's, since shad (species of fish) populated the river so heavily. The Edwards dam was built on the river in 1837 out of stone and wood. Constructed mainly for hydropower, the dam destroyed the shad industry in the area, since it blocked fish from travelling to mating grounds. Pollution also damaged this ecosystem. In 1999, the dam was removed, and this started a trend around the U.S. of removing dams that might wreck ecosystems. The river now has a large fish population, and has been saved from disaster.

I am glad that this story has a happy ending, especially when so many of this nature don't. The people of the Augusta community took the initiative, and stood up to industry that would rather have an inexpensive power source than save the integrity of an ecosystem such as this. I believe that the health of the environment should always be taken into consideration before developing areas. In the future, with President Obama's policy on the environment, hopefully we can start to see threatened animal habitats in the U.S. make a turnaround.

Tornadoes in west

On Monday night a violent tornado ripped through Oklahoma leaving five dead and dozens more injured. This tornado topped off many trees demolished many trailer homes and damaged homes. Along in his storm there was baseball sized hail, violent winds and many downed power lines leaving many without power. Now that the storm has left there is a lot of clean up and hope for no more storms.

I think that as a way to avoid injuries that people in the west should have an underground cellar to project them from danger. Also if a scientist could make a new radar system to better predict severity of storms. It would also be cool to have better routes on how a tornado will travel. Along with these ideas there should be testing of tornadoes and types of homes to try and make a stronger durable home to make it safer during a tornado.

As Monarch Butterflies Journey North, Gardeners Can Help Protect Species, Researcher Says

It has been a hard winter for Monarch butterflies. The low temperatures, storms and habitat destruction have all threatened the butterflies' overwintering population in Mexico.Taylor says that a lot of different butterflies are very harmful. He says that a lot different butterflies come out when it has a cool , warm or hot temerature. There are mre harmful butterflies then there that aren't.

i think that their should be a way to find out the different species that are dangerous and that are not dangerous. We should be aware of all the different types of harmful animals. It's better for the butterflies to be going up north then messing with people's gardens.

Evidence growing of Air Pollution's Link To Heart Diesase

The scientific evidence linking air pollution to heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular death has "substantially strengthened," and people, particularly those at high cardiovascular risk, should limit their exposure, according to an updated American Heart Association scientific statement. They say that it is mainly fossils fuel from the industies that are making people sick and it is causing a cardiovascular risk alos heart failure. The scientist also says that evidents from small particals could spread.Once inhaled, can cause inflammation and irritate nerves in the lungs. These responses can start a cascade of changes that adversely affect the rest of the body. The doctors say that their is a way o stop you heart failure and cardiovascular risk.

I think that people should stop throwing food , paper and trash out of the windows and other places. There is a trash can that people can put their things in so that people won't throw things on the ground. Sometimes when people are working on things like machines the tend to have sone kind of chemical that will burse . Also there is fuel that is in theroad from car accidents that some people might have heart failure , too.

COMPUTER ADDICTS (: !

A new brand of addiction could become a real career stopper for many of us. The use of the Interne, to which the new breed of addicts have lost all control. In Korea, most addictive behaviors play out at public cafes. American addicts typically use at home, behind closed doors. There have been at least 10 heart-related deaths linked to online activities in Internet cafes. However tragic the condition might be, look at how difficult it could be to walk away from the computers. Computers are everywhere, so you really cant hide from them. Soon Internet access could be essentially ubiquitous, available from every room of the house, from every major electronic device, and from every major library and school. This new addiction reminds us that there can be real problems with leading increasingly virtual lives. I personally belive that the computer is addictive. If it wasnt for all the cool sites and advertisements no one ould care for the computer that much. But with things like facebook and myspace , its hard to stay away.

SWEAR words, huh ?

Although the news might not stop parents from letting their kids cuss, it turns out that cussing may be a good thing. A study suggests that four-letter words may help alleviate pain. Before the study, participants were asked to write down five words they might say after putting their hand in cold chilly water. When people had a swear word for their mantra, or chant, popular choices were: the s-word, the f-word, two b-words and a c-word, they were able to keep a hand in the chilly water longer. People who swore reported less pain. Swearing helped both sexes keep their hands in cold water longer. Women said it relieved a great amout of pain after the experiment. I personally think that swear words are okay sometimes , when you use them the right way. You stil shouldnt use them all the time , because it is still bad. I also agree that it does relieve pain or anger. This study was a great idea.

ANiMALS , w|o oxygen ?

Scientists found three animal species living below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. The animals were multicellular. That means their bodies have many cells. They also very tiny each being about the same size as a large grain of sand . They look like tiny umbrellas with legs. But they are animals. The crazy thing about these animals are , they dont need oxygen to live ! Biologists know only that a single-celled organisms can live in places that have no oxygen, and that multicellular organisms can visit these places, but not live there. Finding these animals have really changed their minds. The three species are types of loriciferan. They live in a part of the world called L’Atalante Basin. While the scientists did more test the also found eggs from these animals. They are still shocked by these animals but they are going to let them live. I think that it was a good thing that they found these animals. It has opened up a new life form which we never would have known about if they wouldn't have been found.

How Bad Can The Spill Get ?

On the Gulf Of Mexico over 2oo,ooo gallons of oil is released every day. Tar balls and oil birds are already washing up onto the shore. The Oil Company is responsible to clean up the oil; as far as, cleaning the water, the animals, and fixing the leak. In my opinion, that is a fair agreement because like it was stated if the safety equipment installed worked appropriately this situation could have been a less of a matter. BP stated that the worst scenario would be if as much oil equivalent to 10 Olympic swimming pools were released. The cleanup will take more than stopping the leak, the cleanup will be a long term plan that will take time.

Vog on Hawaii's Big Island Leads to Disaster Declaration

Vog, is also known as volcanic smog and particularly in Hawaii the vog found is from the Volcano Kilauea. Kilauea releases sulfur dioxide which forms vog when mixed with sunlight and dust. The vog has a negative impact on plants because the vog burns and dries plants. In my opinion, seeing how Hawaii is mostly known for its beautiful plants and trees along with the views. Dried up dead plants aren't going to look well. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is now giving low funds to help clean the air and replant plants. Different farms and areas of land were affected badly as well.

Volcanic Ash Causes Spanish Airpirts to Close .

On Saturday 16 different Spanish airports were closed due to the volcanic ash from an Icelandic Volcano. The volcanic ash also expanded over to cancelled flights on Sunday too. A major airport that was closed was the Barcelona Airport which is the country's second busiest. This Volcanic Ash affected the Airports financially in my opinion, seeing how the loss of flights either had to be postponed or customers decided to not spend their money any longer. 673 flights are an approximate number of how many flights were cancelled on Saturday alone. The ash cloud is expected to expand far East; however, Airports are reopening and flights are beginning to take place again.

Common Mosquito Repellent No Longer Repels Certain Mosquitoes

Some mosquitoes can develop a resist against the substances we use to repel them away. This was shown in a laboratory test in the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and associates in the UK. The mosquitoes that are that developed this are the yellow fever mosquitoes. They no longer sense the smell of DEET a substance used in mosquito repellents all over the world. The scientists have done seen that the sensory cell on the mosquito's antenna has stopped reacting to DEET. That’s why they are limiting the use of repellents that have DEET to be use in large amount in a limited area to be use so that they don’t make other mosquitoes species resistant.

I see that mosquitoes are mutating to what once we used to repel them way from us. This is amazing I never knew this could ever happen but know we might end up with more health problems. Since mosquitoes carry disease like fever and other things this will harm us bad. Hopefully this mosquitoes aren’t in the USA to harm us. They have to quickly come up with a good repellant that will keep them away from us.

Evidence Growing of Air Pollution's Link to Heart Disease, Death

There has been scientific evidence of pollution being a cause of heart attacks strokes and cardiovascular death. People particularly those at high cardiovascular risk should limit their exposure according to an updated American Heart Association scientific statement. People that been healthy for years being exposed to polluted air could get an of this tree types of problem that are in the first sentence. The risk increases by fuel combustion from industry, traffic, and power generation. Biomass burning, heating, cooking, indoor activities and forest fires may also be relevant sources, particularly in certain regions. Growing evidence also shows that longer-term this exposures such as over a few years can lead to an even larger increase in these health risks.

Wow I never knew that this could be caused by these exposures to these items. That mean that pollution should start to be stopped and we have to do something. And if this keeps going people will start to not live in areas with too much exposure to these bad things. This is good because researchers are really finding why there are people with health risks and how they can prevent this. So know everybody’s know about this issue so that we can all help to make our planet pollution free.

Global Warming Threatens Plant Diversity

In the coming decades the climate might change and will set world wide conditions for the plants. Thereby major regional differences may be expected to occur and plants will have to adapt to new conditions of climate. The researchers have investigated the numbers of plant species to be found in different regions under current climatic conditions and they used this as what could happen in the future. The researchers can’t do a prediction on when it will majorly affect the plant diversity or humankind as well. It is possible that the worst effects of global warming on plant species numbers could be felt in the tropical Amazonian rain forests in South America.

I think this is a big issue because global warming is affecting our plants and trees and it could make people move and live in different places. We should try and do less pollution on our earth because if this happen it will cause us to adapt to a new kind of world and we don’t know how it’ll be. I think that this is a great research to make us understand that global warming is affecting much more than just us but other thing that get included. Hopefully this won’t happen and will keep living like we always had. So we need to stop pollution cause it causing global warming to change our planet.

note taking

Human factors researchers determined that tablet personal computers can be used to aid students in classrooms. They offer a single platform that can include a student’s notes, textbook, assignments, and what the teacher wrote on the blackboard. Students are likely to be better organized and learn more quickly.

I think that notetaking on a computer or a tablet is a better way to take notes. Because if you can type faster than you write you could get more out of you notes by haveing more time to understand lectures. The downside to this is that students could be playing games or doing something irrelevent to classwork and thus failing assignments. I think this could help most students out due to the fact most students use a computer daily and could know how to use one quickly.

HOW BAD CAN THE SPILL GET?

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is getting more serious. Everyday since the spill, there has been more and more gallons of oil released too. Right now, 200,000 gallons of oil is being spilled everyday. Tar balls and oiled-up birds are already washing up on the Louisiana shore. Engineers are being careful about what they do to stop the leak because some things can make the leak worse. For a long-term fix, BP is drilling a relief well that will hopefully drain some of the oil. Scientists say this oil leak could last for many months and even years.

This is terrible that this is still going on. It's insane how many gallons of oil leaks into the ocean everyday. This oil is killing fishes and other animals day by day and I don't think some people even realize it. The oil isn't only killing our animals, but our ocean. The oil is taking over the entire ocean. After all of this is over with, who knows if our oceans will even be safe to visit. This oil spill is also costing us. If you haven't noticed, prices on items have been going up just because of this oil spill we can't stop. I think the people who are trying to get this problem under control need to take this a little more serious and try harder to get this problem solved right away.

Paraplegic patients who still have some active nerve endings in their legs can find major improvements with a new therapy. During rehabilitation on a bicycle, special pads send electrical pulses that cause neurons to grow and create new nerves. The specially-fitted bicycle can be used at home, and has helped patients regain function years after an injury.

I think this is very interesting knowing tha a paraplegic patient can have a chance to walk again. The major thing I would have never thought possible was how scientists can recreate nerves. This can be a life changing rehabiliation for some people by making the paralyzed walk again. If I were ever to be paralyzed i woul;d definitely want to be a candidate for this treatment. I think this is a great new way to fix broken lives.

Atomic Movement During Photosynthesis Photographed With X-Ray Flash

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have managed, with the help of an advanced X-ray flash, to photograph the movement of atoms during photosynthesis .The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble is home of the advanced particle accelerators, whose pulsing X-ray beams are used by researchers to photograph and study life's smallest components atoms, molecules and proteins.Researchers from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg and at Chalmers University of Technology have now used this advanced technology to photograph the dynamics of life's most fundamental.
The focus of the study was a protein which is central to the conversion of light to chemical energy during photosynthesis, and which process the Gothenburg researchers have been the first to successfully photograph. The X-ray image shows how the protein temporarily stores the light energy immediately before a chemical bond forms a movement that takes place on a scale of less than a nanometre.

i think that it is good that they are inventing new different things to help out the human body.It is good because we can see the energy of the photosynthesis. It could help us in life.We also could see pictures of very cool energy and see what causes things in our body.

Global Warming Threatens Plant Diversity

This article was about how the climate is going to change around the world. The cool, moist regions could become homes for new species. Climate change could bring great diversity in plant and animal life. The researchers have investigated the numbers of plant species to be found in different regions under current climatic conditions. There is suppose to be around 18 new climate changes.

I thought this article was interesting. I new the earth was going through changes, but i didn't know that new plant species would be created. I curious to know how the new animal and plant species are going to look. I didn't know that because the climate is changing it was going to change homes for animals and plants. I want to know how scientist can predict how many changes are going to be made during a year.

Volcanic ash shuts down European airports

France, Switzerland, Italy, and Germany had to shut down many airports on Sunday, May 2 due to volcanic ash. This volcanic ash was coming from a volcano in Iceland. It was a Glacier- Capped volcano. The ash in the air stretched to Portugal and Spain in the same day. Portugal cancelled 232 flights and made people wait it out. This was an all day thing because it started really early Sunday and lasted until late in the afternoon. The airports say you have to cancel flights when things like this happens because trying to locate different routes can still be dangerous. Once volcanic ash spreads, it spreads everywhere in a matter of time.

I think the airports did the right thing by cancelling flights. It didn't matter how mad the people got, you were doing it for their safety. I hope this doesn't happen very often because it could mess up businesses, the airports, and people's plans. Volcanic ash could also cause tons of pollution to our environment which isn't safe for our health. I think it's crazy how the ash spread to Portugal and Spain in the same day. That means there was a lot of ash in the air and it traveled very quickly. It would be great if a scientist or someone could come up with something to prevent volcanoes from exploding out of no where like that, but I guess there isn't much you can do. It just happens.

blinking neurons

A electric current is invisible to naked eye. But now scientists have found away to see into our thoughts. They are first trying this experimental trial on mice as an alternative to humans. What this is showing is that nerves have a certain jolt when you are scared or nervous.

I think this is a major breakthrough for science. I think this will be useful in criminal investigation. One way is that if a suspect is being incooperable you could you this to get new answers. I also think this new technology could be abuse by reading peoples minds to get secret information. Overall I consider this to be for the better of things and a major breakthrough into the human brain.

coffee is bad

people who drink alot of coffee can get more headaches then people that dont drink coffee because caffeine can have withdrawals with out it and it can make u want some that it kills your head and caffeine by its self is bad because it make u hyper and it can make your head hurt to because if you need that to wake you up its not a health way to start you day.

i think this is bad because so many people start with coffee and soda that it could become ever bad but at least its not like cancer it just makes you feel bad but they need to find a way that can make coffee with out caffeine but still wake you up in the morings

people with depression eat more chocolate it does not say if it make them feel better or not just people that have depression eat more than most other people the reason behide this is that some think it may just give them a boost of happiness

i think that it does make people happier because it gives them sugar ruse and just for a little while it make there life a little better and does make them think it is better and that is why people gain pounds when they are depressed they eat fatting foods.

food chain

most people think that lions tiger and bear would be at the top of food chain that is mostly true bird and lizards should be up there because they eat insects that eat plants so when they die or there waste matier goes into the ground it helps make new tree and plants which make the food chain go better so the place has more food for other animals.

i think this is cool because it does help the world and it make smaller animals seem more useful to the world and it save the big animals to because some don't just eat meet they eat plants to

Decon Green can clean up the most toxic messes, developers claim

U.S. Army scientists have invented a new cleaning product that can decontaminate surfaces infected with nerve gas, anthrax spores and other gross substances and they say it's environmentally friendly. Mustard gas, the nerve agent VX, anthrex spores or radioactive isotopes have had to have their own cleaning agents, and most of them aren't environmentally friendly. "If the decontaminant comes into contact with the agent, it will destroy it" says George Wagner of the U.S. Army's Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.

Since Decon Green has been created, this will help so much with cleanups and with the environment. Even though its still being tested to see if it fully clears chemical spills, its still progress because no other chemical cleaner, that we have discovered yet, can clean this much and still be environmentally friendly.

Tyrannosaurs lived in the Southern Hemisphere, too

Paleontologists digging in Australia's aptly named Dinosaur Cove have unearthed the first known fossils of a tyrannosaur from the Southern Hemisphere. The Fossils include the remains of just one 30-centimeter-long bone from the creature's pelvic girdle, but certain features of that bone are seen only in tyrannosaurs, says Roger B.J. Benson and his colleagues report in the March 26 Science. Previously, all known fossils of the tyrannosaur lineage have been unearthed in the Northern Hemisphere.

So basicly their saying that the fossil found in the southern part of Australia is a dinosaur that we thought only roamed in the Northern Hemisphere, which means that pangaea really did exists. I thought this was very interesting because this is just another answer to the possibility that there really was a supercontinent.

birds dyeing

more than half of birds that nest in tree don't make it till adult hood because of predators like snakes rat snakes are the most dangous type of predator to nesting they can birds because they can get up trees fast and they love the taste a bird so it make them ever deadly to little and baby birds.

i think this is a promblem but it has happened forever so its not going to kill the birds out its just a nature thing that happens all the time and they have not gone extient so i am not worried about it

Pokeberries Hold the Secret

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100429141430.htm

Pokeberries are one of the most efficient and affordable form of solar energy. These weeds grow on every continent, excluding Antarctica, and can hold immense amounts of sunlight within the berries. In the berries, there are small 'cup's that absord sunlight, until the 'cups' are full. There are countless 'cups' in the berries, so a lot of sunlight is absorbed daily. These berries create more than twice the amount of sunlight energy than a flat plant would, so it's much more effective. The way the berries are manufactured are by picking them, then spraying them with a type of fluid, then shipping them on some plastic sheets. Then they are sold to other countries, and then the other countries can start to create their own pokeberry farm. It's a cheap process, but a very helpful one as well.

I thought this article was fascinating. Even though it was only about a weed, the weed helps us tremendous amounts. I thought that if third-world countries could start to manufacture these and ship them out, they could start making some money and then they'd have less poverty problems, and help the environment at the same time! This was an easy-to-read article, a quick source for a simple fun-fact, and all in all amazing. I never knew that those berries were so helpful, and if used correctly, we could probably use solarpower more efficiently and more easily. I think that there should be at least two or three pokeberry plants in each some major countries, like North and South America, China, Africa, and Europe, so solar power would be used more instead of electric-power.

Core Rotates Faster than Crust

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/08/050826081334.htm

Apparently, Earth's core rotates faster than the crust. From 1996, this had been a nine year debate ending in 2005. The proof was given by geologist Xiaodong Song, who presented the facts as to why the core's rotation is faster. Song and his team observed seventeen sets of similar seismic waves, called waveform doublets, from earthquakes that occurred near the coast of South America. The doublets allowed the scientists to find temporal changes along the paths of the samples. Although the inner core moves faster, the outer core does not move as fast because of it being mainly liquid, having less friction throughout the outer core.

I thought, again, that this article would be interesting. It was a little more intruiging than my last article, but I found that this one was just more confusing, so I didn't enjoy it very much. There was a section about 'differential rotation,' but I really didn't understand what that is. I don't really know what to write about my opinion, other than that I didn't particularly like this article, it wasn't very interesting. What I learned from it, though, was that the inner core moves faster than the crust, and because of that, we have a magnetic field. So, I'm kind of thankful that we have proved that the crust is slower than the core. This article was not very interesting at all, really.

U.S. childhood obesity rate continues to rise

Nearly one-third of children age 10 to 17 in the United States were overweight as of 2007, and roughly half of those kids qualified as obese, a new survey shows. Obesity rates rose in 36 states since the last sampling in 2003, according in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicince. Mississippi had the highest obesity rate in this age group at nearly 22 percent in 2007; Oregon had the lowest at 9.6 percent. South Carolina on the other hand, saw its childhood obesity rate drop from 19 percent to 15 percent.

Its obvious that obesity is a big problem in the United States because we are so spoiled and we don't even realize how it is effecting us. We need to get a handle on this situation as soon as possible because if we dont then the rates we continue to grow and people can get very sick, and it can cause death. We all need to watch our eating habbits and excersize regularly and teach younger ones the same pattern so they will grow up doing what they did as a child.

Earth Lives On or At Least For Another 100 Years.

Scientists received a image from a telescope 7 day ago. It was an image received by the Arecibo Radar Telescope in Puerto Rico. It was a picture of a asteroid 1.5 million miles away. The asteroid is about 1,300 feet long. Using this picture scientists can determine that the Earth will not be hit with an asteroid for another 100 years. They can do this because the Telescope can do more than just take pictures. It also measures how far away the asteroid is. Thus knowing that the scientists can figure out where other asteroids are going.

That's a relief. I can finally relax now that I am safe from meteors hitting me. I used to worry about that all of the time when I was little. I sure all of us will be dead in 100 years so were good. This is very use full information to know. I am sure a lot of people would be relieved to know this. I think this needs to be a fact that every one should know. Scientists did a good job doing this.

Yes this is the last blog I have to write as far as I know!!! I think, maybe. ??? I don't know. Wait what do I know? Ooooh I know that the earth will not get hit by an asteroid in 100 years. And I also know how to spell my name... G-N-A-T like the bug! Ya, so, that all Fokes! You don't have to go home but you can't stay here. Seriously. Now that I think about it there isn't a "G" in my name. Except in Nathaniel. Ms. Boggs, don't look now but Nat has got a stupid look on his face.

Probing Earth's Core

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100428110810.htm

This article was about scientists using earthquake methods to try and discover more components of the Earth's core, our magnetic field, and how our planet forms. As most of us know, Earth's core is made of iron, nickel, and lighter elements such as silicon, sulfur, carbon, and possibly oxygen. Students of University of Calgary issued a seismic wave speed to determine materials at the top of Earth's core. The students said that observations of earthquakes is one of the few tools that they use, but the research method is probably one of the most definitive. The method they use is similar to hearing a conversation in an empty church. Using a digital proccessing approach, they were able to analize faint signals that were produced by fourty-four earthquakes, and were able to measure the sound speed of the top of Earth's core with immaculate accuracy.

When I saw the article title, I thought it would be pretty detailed, but I was disappointed in it, since it didn't really cover that much. It wasn't boring, but it wasn't exciting. I was kind of excited at the fact that using this method of research, we'll be able to find out more of our magnetic field and the inside of our core, and maybe from that we'll be able to find out more about prehistoric life as well. I wish the article was a little bit more informative, so we'd be able to know more of what went on, and how they performed the tests. I'd also like to know what kind of results came from the tests, and then see what things make up our Earth's core.

Nature Fighting Back Against Gulf Oil Spill

The smell of the nasty oil of the shore of Mexico, could bring good news to the people in Louisiana. The smell that they could smell was the oil of evaporating, where once in the atmosphere it evaporates. The heavier oil will be broken done in to droplets, which will leave time for microbes to move in and feast. This oil riched water is basically butter to these organisms. These microbes only nibble on the smooth droplets first because they are easier to nibble on than jagged ones. Also because of the warm weather the microbes will stick around longer.

This to me is really interesting. I can not believe that there would be any type of thing that would want to eat oil to begin with. I also find it amazing how they are picky, that they only want to eat the smooth ones rather than the jagged ones.

The Flight of the Future: Will it be Green?

In Europe scientists are working on project Clean Sky. This project is biased on making aircraft quieter, cleaner, and all around more environmentally friendly. The goal is to achieve new structural and aerodynamic concepts. They are testing different designs on the body of the aircraft. Experts want a 50 percent reduction in carbon dioxide and in noise. If everything goes OK then nitrogen oxide should be decreased by 80 percent. They wish to achieve these feats by 2020. There are 16 different nations working on this project.

I think this is good thing to work on. I think the US needs to be included in this project as well. We need to protect our environment as much as we possibly can. I wonder how much pollution air planes actually make a year. I do not think scientists will be able to reduce all of that stuff by 2020. They have to do a lot of work. I wonder if doing this will reduce to price of air planes in general. All I've got to say is good luck!

I'm not lazy I just decide to not do stuff. Oh wait, that does mean I am lazy.

Discover extra layer of protection on bacteria spores

There was a study conducted by researchers who found out that the most resistant organisms on earth carry an extra coating of protection previously undetected. The researchers studied the spores of a non-pathogenic bacterium which is commonly found in soil. The scientist has called the undetected coating layer the spore crust. A combination of fluorescence microscopy experiments and high-resolution image analysis made the researchers to overcome a theoretical limitation of light microscopy, pinpoint the location of the spores' coat proteins with a good point of precision, and build a map of the spore coat.

Scientist discover new stuff every day and that a true thing. I never knew bacteria could have another coat that protects it. I think that it’s awesome how bacteria can protect itself by having coats that protect it from dyeing off. I think bacteria are cool and how they work and how they reproduce. I think that even though some bacteria can make you sick it helps humans too.

Breathe Easy: A Natural Fruit Compound May Help Asthma

This article was about how fruit can help people with asthma. Scientist in New Zealand found a compound from a New Zealand blackcurrant that helps reduce inflammation. Scientist said that eating fruit can help with asthma. They studied peoples lung tissue and the things that reduced inflammation. The study was led by Dr Rogerin Hurst in New Zealand.

I thought this article was interesting. I didn't know you could do anything else to control asthma. I know this information could help a lot of people. Theres a lot of people that have asthma really bad, and all they can do is use there inhalers. I think that if people knew more about how fruit helped controll there asthma, they would eat a lot more fruit.

volcano still causing issues

The volcano in Iceland has started to cause more issues for travelers now it has delayed them again. The volcano has again posed a threat of erupting. So efforts have been made to make it as least dreadful as possible.

I think that having a good prediction of national disasters would be great because you would have less casualties. It would also be great if someone could find away to make a volcano stop erupting. Also if someone could find away tclear all the debris out of the atmosphere they could help save the o-zone and other important parts.

New Treatment for Hyperactivity in Children: Thought-Operated Computer System

This article was about how in the UK there's a new computer game that helps children who have ADHD. When children play the game they wear a helmet. The helmet records and picks up brain waves. The game they play is educational. The children play the game three times a week for 12 weeks. The game has helped many children calm down and be less hyper.

I didn't know that there was things to help children calm down when they have ADHD. I know that when children have ADHD they take medicine. I have a few friends who have ADHD and I know that they can be very hyper and can't stay focused very long. There medicine sometimes doesn't work, and they are still hyper. I can imagine that ADHD is worse in little kids than rather than teenagers and adults.

Baby Swimmers Have Better Balance, Study Suggests

This article was about how babies who swim have better balance and can pick things up earlier than babies who don't swim. Scientist did research on 19 babies who swam and 19 babies who didn't. The babies went swimming around two hours a week. The ages of the babies were from two to three months. The study ended when the children were five years old.

I thought this article was very interesting. I never knew that teaching your baby how to swim could help them keep there balance. I thought that you had to wait to put your baby in a pool, but apparently not. I have learned a lot of things from this article. When I have a child I think I am going to teach him or her how to swim when there are a baby.

The oil spill in the Gulf of mexico

The engineers from the British oil firm BP are trying to find a way to stop the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The well was blown out and the well is leaking oil about some 5,000 barrels a day since the explosion of the well. Mean while it’s been washing up on the cost of Alabama and other nearby coasts. The crews have been laying inflatable booms and spraying chemical dispersants and setting fire to the slick to try to protect local wildlife. They are trying to help the spill stop by putting a funnel iron box weighting 98 tones and they hope it collects 85% of the leaking oil.

I hope they stop this soon because this is going to really do some damage. I never knew this could happen I thought they had everything under control. This is a big issue they really have to get as much attention to this and it will take some time to clean this up. It will be a job to clean this up and well hopefully they do this quickly. I think that this will as well get oil prices up because of so much oil we are losing and this is bad.

Severe storm kills 54 in India

In New Delhi, India Saturday a severe and powerful storm killed 54 people. The storms strong winds ripped through cities. The storm affected at least 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Many of the deaths were blamed on lightning strikes and falling trees. In many cities the fierce winds have turned over buses and have broken down trees. The storm a month ago killed 122 people and about 300,000 homes were destroyed.

It is strange how India has had 2 violent storms in just two months. I have never heard about that happening before. When it looks like a storms going to happen people need to go home or someplace indoors. They also need to get off the road because during these storms trees are falling. I don't like that all of these people are dying because of a storm.

Quake strikes off Indonesia coast

Off the coast of Indonesia on Sunday, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck. The U.S. Geological Survey said that it did not trigger a tsunami. At the depth of 28 miles, the quake struck about 140 miles southeast of Banda Aceh. This quake triggered a tsunami at first but it was canceled about 45 minutes after the quake. In April, an earthquake of 7.7 triggered 2 tsunamis. Indonesia is on the Ring of Fire and is also on a fault line, so it is prone to many earthquakes and volcanoes.

I think its weird that there have been so many earthquakes this year. It seems like they have happened almost everyday in a different country. it tells me that we need to be ready if one does happen in the U.S. because it could have a high magnitude like all the other ones. I hope that countries like Indonesia are able to rebuild and are able to move on from what happened because of the earthquake.

Mom, 4-year-old rescued by swim coach

Since the historic flooding in the southeast, more than 30 people have died. Neelynn Shevcraft and her 4-year old daughter barely escaped being among them. When Shevcraft was a home grding papers she heard water lapping against her house. She looked outside and half of her car was underwater. She called 911 and they told her to get on the highest point one-story house. so she put her daughter and her 2 dogs on the counter. After she opened the attic door she put her daughter and the dogs up there. Sheucraft started calling people so they can help get her daughter out. When one of their neighbors, John Morse, a swimming coach heard that they were stuck in their house he got int his car and drove to their house and found shallow water near the house and dived into the water. he was able to rescue Shevcraft, her daughter, and their 2 dogs.

I think that its great that there are brave people out there that are not afraid to put their life on the line to safe other people. Since the flood in Nashville, many people have been donating money. Some people who have donated are Country Music Singers. Even though most of their homes and their record studios have been destroyed they are still helping people. i think its great that people are helping each other out during this hard time.

NASA satellite veiws massive gulf oil spill

On one of NASA's Terra spacecrafts a pair of instruments captured new photos of the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, an explosion destroyed the Deepwater Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico. This platform was 50 miles offshore. This resulted in a substantial loss of life and releasing 5,000 barrels of oil per day into the ocean. The huge oil slick was carried to the Mississippi Delta. Now the oil slick is off the coasts of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. With these new instruments scientists are going to be able to try to find away to stop the oil from growing and spreading to other parts of the ocean.

In my opinion I think it is good that they are trying to find new ways to help stop the oil spill from spreading. These instruments will help by letting people know how big the oil spill is and and how they can stop it. They need to figure out a way to get it out fast because more oil is being put in the ocean everyday. the oil is killing many types of fish life so I hope they can find a way to get all the oil out.

Childhood Mental Health Problems Blight Adult Working Life

This article was about how childhood menatal health problems can affect them when they get older. The scientsist did a study on children born in March 1958. They keeped studying them through out there lives and checked them when they were 7, 11, and 16. The scientist used the information that there teachers and parents gave them. Later in life mental health problems led to depression and anxiety in mid life.

I thought this article was very interesting. I didn't know that if you had mental health problems when your a child, it could affect your adult life. I learned somethings from this article, like that having mental health problems means you could have low social support. It aslo means that they can be insecure about many things. Also that the childs behavior can show how he or she may act when they get older.

Toddlers and TV: Early Exposure Has Negative and Long-Term Impact

This article was about how tv can negatively affect toddlers. The scientist were doing a study on children between the ages of two and four. The research showed that there was many bad impacts if children start watching tv too much too soon. In the study there was 1,314 children participating. One fact that they learned was that there is a ten percent increase in children being bullied.

In this article I have learned many things. One thing I learned was that children who watch too much tv when there little have a seven percent decrease in classroom engagement. Another fact that I learned was the children can have a bigger BMI. Also that tv can affect them when there older and can limit there physical activity. I think that if children watch less tv they would be better off in many ways.
